NMP Blog - Nail the story..

At this stage of the module one statement has started to show it’s importance and it’s also one of the main differing points between still and moving, this has been the term “Nail the Story”

I think this importance is more prevalent in video than in stills, in photography you can afford to be slightly free-er with your interpretations, or at least I thought that’s what I found to be beneficial in my work. But of course you always run the danger of taking that too far, by not having definite views about anything, or any sort of desire in communicating anything apart from what you gather. The risk of “falling between two stools” was one which my previous career as a working photographer sailed close to, many, many times..

So I definitely grasp the importance of the act, as I see it you must know what the story is, it may need slimming down, as trying to incorporate too much will always confuse the piece. Slightly scary idea for me that as I’ve always had an inclination to aim high, do bigger, to shoot the bigger piece but it’s a lesson I’m learning slowly, the absolute need to slim it down to it’s constituent threads and make the decision on what to concentrate on. Sometimes it can be just one element of the story and that’s ok Nathan.

The worry is that I’ve chosen what can be seen as quite a large area in exploring the idea of Middling Sin, so I most definitely need to trim that down and identify what part of that story I want to communicate…believe that’s where getting the script written, with only a few guides from me will be incredibly beneficial.

So I need to (all together now..) Nail the Story...sorry for what may be seen as my flippancy here, it’s not to parody it, I love having a short snappy, underlining message that can be added as the punchline to almost any story told here, hmm isn’t that just the point of Nail the Story!

There is a need to add in a “that’s not to say that I need to..” and in this case it’s to oversimplify, if you think about all good moving image pieces, nearly all have multiple layers that communicate, so many different meanings and ideas.

Of course that can be taken too far, so I’m thinking fair use symbolism, combine ideas for one another and work in some sub texts will be good for the piece.

Looking forward to this journey…

Thanks for reading..
