NMP 8 - Shooting

Shooting moving Image footage

Prior to this module I’d shot bits and bobs but never had a full on project to go for, but these experiences made me think that there are 2 ways to view a scene (at least) in terms of capturing, one from a stills perspective and one from a moving image perspective.

I think I’m labouring under the misapprehension that I need to shoot from a moving image pov, this has lead to my experiences of shooting moving image being a mixed bag so far.

I’m shooting 3 short films to add to my content and also for experience, these 3 films are being shot in 3 differing ways. Reading is a direct result of my experience in a single day so is shot as such, the commute idea is very similar to dashcam footage enabling me to shoot my actual journeys and what they entail, so I think Sin will be quite different I think as i see it as a more visual filmic piece possibly with characters depending on the final script edit but am open to see how it develops

Shooting Imagery for reading

So for my first piece that I’ve produced as a test run, I’ve been working on the ideas and disruptions I’ve experienced with the time to read liked the shots to almost be moving stills that could fade/cross over onto each other..

Shooting content Commute specific

This is a fixed camera style from all angles of the car this is intended to be a fly on the dashboard style, where things happen in the scene as the car moves along the road.

Hopefully using these two styles will help me inform my practice and feed into my final submitted piece.

I do wonder if my shooting style, particularly when I shoot moving image look like they’ve been shot by a predominately stills based practitioner?

Thinking I’ve seen this somewhere before as a “criticism” levelled at photographer/directors like Stanley Kubrick, Wes Anderson and Anton Corbijn especially when they started to shoot feature films. Not sure it’s a criticism though more an observational comment. Similar to the recent film that was shot in a incredibly stylistic way “Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri.”

I wonder if there is anything I can consciously do about this or if it’s something you have to just roll with it and see where it ends up..

Food for reflection
